Recognise MKO Abiola as former President – Family tells Buhari

Jude Idimogu, a former lawmaker has called in President Bola Tinubu to declare Moshood Abiola as an ex-president posthumously.

The lawmaker who represented Oshodi-Isolo Constituency II between 2015 and 2023 said the president has done well by honouring the late Abiola as one of Nigeria’s heroes.

He, however, stated that it would be right to go a step further by declaring the late Abiola as an ex-president.

Idimogu’s call to Tinubu follows the exposé by Ibrahim Babangida in his memoir that Abiooa won the 1993 presidential election.

He also commended the president for honouring the late Abiola and Bola Ige for their input in Nigeria’s democratic struggles.

“Yes, Abiola won the election, and I urge President Tinubu to declare him an ex-president posthumously, in recognition of his democratic victory,” Idimogu said.

Idimogu further highlighted that Abiola was not formally declared the winner of 1993 because the election was annulled before the final declaration.

He, however, noted that the decision to do that lies between the executive and legislature.

“In general, implementation depends on the President’s state of mind and willingness to address the matter legally and appropriately,” he said.
