The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken major steps toward enhancing its combat capabilities with the fast-tracked acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from the United States.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, Director of Public Relations and Information for the NAF.
According to the statement, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, led a senior delegation to the United States to participate in a Programme Management Review Meeting on the helicopter acquisition.
The strategic session, held between June 9 and 13 in San Diego, California, brought together senior officials from the United States Government and Bell Textron, the manufacturer of the AH-1Z Viper.
Following the meeting, Air Marshal Abubakar visited Camp Pendleton in California, where he toured key units under the United States Marine Aircraft Group 39 — the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 (HMLA-367) and Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39 (MALS-39). These squadrons are actively responsible for the operation and maintenance of the AH-1Z platform.
“During the visit, the CAS had the opportunity to inspect the helicopters firsthand and engage with senior officers of the United States Marine Corps on best practices for the operation, sustainment, and logistics support of the AH-1Z platform,” Gabkwet said.
Air Marshal Abubakar, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to the U.S. government for its continued strategic partnership with Nigeria.
He stated, “The acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters will significantly enhance the NAF’s combat effectiveness, operational efficiency, and mission readiness.”
The air chief also reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the delivery of the aircraft within the shortest possible timeframe.
“Every necessary step will be taken to facilitate a seamless procurement and integration process. This visit has provided a unique opportunity to understand best practices for the operation, sustainment, and logistical support of the AH-1Z platform from the United States Marine Corps,” he said.
Air Marshal Abubakar emphasized that the NAF remains committed to the responsible and strategic deployment of its growing fleet of assets in the fight against insurgency, banditry, and other security threats across the country.
“Our goal is to create enduring peace while protecting innocent lives and property in line with internationally accepted rules of engagement,” he said.
He also extended appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as unwavering support for the military and its modernization efforts.
“The progress made in the AH-1Z acquisition project is a direct reflection of the President’s unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture,” the CAS noted.
