The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairman, Illya Damagum, is reportedly considering a possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to pursue the 2027 governorship of Yobe State.
Sources say Damagum is considering the move because he is faced with the likelihood of being displaced in the main opposition party.
A source at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja said Mai Mala Buni, governor of Yobe, has offered to support Damagum if he joins the APC.
“Buni is his friend and is dangling the APC ticket before him,” the source told ThisDay.
But another party official dismissed the defection talk, warning that Damagum’s alleged poor relationship with Nyesom Wike, FCT minister, would frustrate any APC ambition.
“We are aware of the defection plot, but he will be rubbished by Wike who is now very influential in the APC,” the official said.
The source confirmed that Damagum is yet to decide his next political move, but ruled out his return as substantive national chairman.
