Social media activist, VeryDarkMan (VDM), has arrived in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, to lend his voice to ongoing protests against the incessant attacks on vulnerable communities in the state.
VDM’s arrival on Sunday drew attention as he joined residents demanding urgent government action following the latest massacre in Yelwata, where over 100 people were killed by suspected militia.
Meanwhile, the police in Benue have dispersed protesters who took to the streets.
The latest attack occurred on Friday night when gunmen, suspected to be Fulani militia, invaded the Yelwata market square, opening fire and using machetes on displaced persons seeking shelter in the area.
Witnesses said the assailants razed houses and properties worth millions of naira during the onslaught.
Several protesters carried placards with inscriptions condemning the killings and demanding urgent government action.
When contacted, Udeme Edet, spokesperson of the Benue police command, said she was not aware of the protest but promised to follow up on the development.
The protest follows the deployment of military personnel to Benue amid rising insecurity in the state.
On Sunday, Governor Alia said tactical teams from the federal government had begun arriving in the state to address the security challenges.
“We assure citizens that more tactical teams have started arriving in Benue from the federal government, and additional security deployments are being arranged for vulnerable areas,” the governor said in a statement by his spokesperson.
