Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has vowed that the perpetrators behind the recent wave of deadly attacks in Benue State will be hunted down and brought to justice.

Egbetokun made the declaration on Monday, June 16, 2025, during a high-level visit to Benue State alongside senior police officers, including Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Operations) Yakubu Kwazhi, DIG (Logistics & Supply) Adebola Hamzat, and Assistant Inspector-General (Zone 4) Zachariah Fera.

The IGP first met with Governor Hyacinth Alia at the State Government House in Makurdi, where he expressed condolences over the killings of scores of residents in recent attacks across rural communities.

He described the incidents as “senseless and barbaric acts of terrorism” and reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s resolve to restore peace in the state.

Governor Alia commended the police leadership for the visit and acknowledged the consistent deployment of personnel and resources to the state.

The police boss also visited Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area, one of the worst-hit communities, where he met with traditional leaders and residents affected by the violence.

He was joined by Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, during the tour of the devastated areas.

While addressing the grieving community, IGP Egbetokun said:
“We understand the pain and trauma you are going through. I want to assure you that we will hunt them down. Those behind these heinous attacks will not go unpunished.”

As part of immediate intervention measures, the IGP ordered the deployment of additional tactical teams and operational assets to vulnerable areas.

He directed DIG Kwazhi to take charge of on-the-ground operations and oversee intensified security efforts aimed at restoring normalcy.

Wrapping up his visit, the IGP met with officers of the Benue State Police Command at the Officers’ Mess in Makurdi.

He pledged enhanced welfare, logistics, and operational support to enable personnel to confront security threats effectively.
