Mohammed Sheiduon, executive secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), says the recent killings in Benue state show there is an urgent need to equip the police with modern infrastructure to prevent further bloodshed.
Speaking on Wednesday during the commissioning of a Smart Divisional Police Headquarters in Akaeze, Ivo LGA of Ebonyi state, Sheiduon said the tragedy in Benue is a reminder of the fragility of peace and the gaps in Nigeria’s security architecture.
He extended condolences to the families and communities affected by the attacks, insisting that violence, whether driven by communal tensions, criminality, or insurgency, must never be normalized.
“This Division is not just a police station but a modern symbol of state presence, rule of law, and public service,” he said.
He described the project as part of the Trust Fund’s broader strategy to build a technology-driven and responsive police force capable of tackling contemporary security threats.
Sheiduon said the location of the new police station was strategic and expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the Inspector General of Police for their commitment to security sector reforms.
He also thanked Governor Francis Nwifuru for supporting the project and creating an enabling environment for its delivery.
Charging officers posted to the division, Sheiduon urged them to uphold public trust and remain diligent in their duties.
His words: “The Nigeria Police Trust Fund exists precisely for this reason — to close the gaps in resources, training, equipment, and infrastructure that limit police effectiveness.
“When we fund the police adequately, we do not just build facilities; we strengthen our collective security, preserve human lives, and reinforce national unity.”
Patricia Obila, deputy governor of Ebonyi, who represented the governor at the event, said the new police station would help reduce crime and hostilities in the area.
She noted that the state government had supported the police with operational vehicles and the construction of more stations across the state.
