Four people have been confirmed dead in a boat mishap that occurred at the Yauri town market river bank of Kebbi State.
It was gathered that the boat capsized after it was flooded with water from the river.
The Disaster Management Team Lead for the Nigerian Red Cross Society in Yauri, Nafiu Nuhu said the incident happened earlier this week.
According to Nuhu, the driver of the boat and the passengers went into panic after it was flooded with water from the river.
He said this led to the boat’s drowning alongside its occupants.
“Some of the victims were rescued from the submerging/drowning accident with the assistance of our members from the Red Cross Society of Nigeria, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and local community members,” Nuhu said.
He also noted that the organisation is working with NIWA and residents of the community to mobilise emergency assistance and a search team for the missing passengers.
Nuhu stated that some bodies recovered from the river were on Tuesday transported to Hikiya village, located across the Yauri River
