Lawmakers of the Benue State House of Assembly on Tuesday, June 17, called for the immediate release of those arrested for protesting the killings by suspected armed herdsmen in Yelewata town of the state.
The Benue State House of Assembly during the plenary ordered the immediate release of the protesters.
Recall that 14 people were arrested by officers of the Nigeria police on Sunday.
The protesters were said to have taken to the streets of Makurdi to protest the incessant killing of residents of the state.
The lawmakers during the plenary also called for the protection of all the vulnerable populations in the state.
This request by the State’s House of Assembly comes hours after the president ordered a more effective approach by security agencies towards ending the crisis in Benue.
The president also announced that he would clear his schedule to visit the state on Wednesday, June 18.
Bayo Onanuga, an aide to the president on information and strategy said Bola Tinubu’s visit is aimed at giving him an opportunity for a first-hand assessment of the impact of the crisis on Benue residents.
