Mallam Nuhu Ribadu mni is the birthname of a popular man know as Nuhu Ribadu, his a former politician and police officer who was born on November 21, 1960 from Nigeria.

He served as the chairman of the Petroleum Revenue Task Force and a former anti-corruption official for the Nigerian government.

He served as the first Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), a government agency in Nigeria entrusted with battling fraud and corruption. He started working as a visiting fellow at the Center for Global Development in April 2009.

He remained in exile up until 2010, when he announced his intention to run for president of Nigeria on the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) platform. Nuhu Ribadu was selected as the ACN’s presidential candidate on Friday, January 14, 2011.

He joined the PDP in August 2014 with the goal of running for governor of Adamawa State in northeastern Nigeria.

From 1980 to 1983, Ribadu pursued the study of law at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna State, earning a Bachelor of Laws degree. In 1984, after spending a year at the Nigerian Law School, he was admitted to the bar.

He also obtained his Master of Laws from the same college. He is a Senior Fellow at St. Antony’s College and a TED Fellow at the University of Oxford in the UK.

Corruption and EFCC

In 2003 and 2007, the Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo chose him to serve as chairman of the EFCC and promoted him to the level of Assistant Inspector General of Police.

Three weeks before newly elected President Umaru Yar’Adua took the oath of office, a promotion that took place on April 9 of that year was later contested on the grounds that it was “illegal, unconstitutional, null and void, and of no legal effect.” Mike Okiro, the Inspector General of Police, announced in December 2007 that Ribadu will be relieved of his duties as EFCC chairman for a one-year training program.

Career in law enforcement

Over 380 billion dollars have been stolen or spent by Nigerian governments since their independence in 1960, Nuhu Ribadu claimed the BBC on October 20, 2006.

The EFCC filed charges against notable bankers, former state governors, ministers, senators, senior political party officials, police commissioners, and members of the “419” gang during Ribadu’s government. The EFCC obtained roughly 270 convictions out of thousands of indictments.

One noteworthy instance involved Mr. Tafa Balogun, his employer and the former Inspector-General of the Nigerian Police Force, who was found guilty, sentenced to prison, and ordered to pay back £150 million as part of a plea agreement.

The removal of Nigeria from the FATF List of Non-Cooperative Countries & Territories, membership in the elite Egmont Group, and the deletion of the US Treasury FINCEN Advisory on Nigeria were just a few of Ribadu’s accomplishments while serving as the EFCC’s director general.

They contributed to the EFCC becoming the most effective anti-corruption enforcement agency on the continent and solidified Ribadu’s standing as a revered anti-corruption warrior.

The testimony of Nuhu Ribadu aided in the prosecution of foreign companies that accepted bribes while conducting business in Nigeria.

However, Ribadu has been charged with using a double standard and being dishonest in his fight against corruption. Many people noticed that despite protecting the former president’s allies, Ribadu pursued alleged adversaries of his boss, Obasanjo.

Fetus Keyamo, a radical lawyer from Lagos, is notable among his detractors. He called the decision to drop the charges against Ribadu wholly wrong, extremely insensitive, completely foolish, and ill-advised.

None of the allegations of corruption have so far been proven true. Owners of a number of periodicals who have taken the lead in criticizing Ribadu were previously charged with corruption.

Ribadu frequently motivates young people to effect change in the world. He encouraged the audience at the fourth iteration of “Project Mentor-Me,” which was held in Abuja and was organized by the non-profit group Group of Patriotic Corpers (GPC), to critically examine their life decisions and how they affect their future. Blossom Nnodim, who is renowned for advocating the use of social media for good, stood by him.

Bribery and persecution

Ribadu received payments to pervert the course of justice while performing his duties; one State governor offered him $15 million and a house abroad.

Ribadu said that he accepted the cash and used the bribe as evidence to bring the state governor to justice during an interview from Washington, DC, for the BBC’s Hardtalk program.

However, this assertion has been debunked by the former governor, who pointed out that just because Ribadu deposited the funds with the CBN doesn’t mean he gave them to him. Before departing for the UK in early 2009, Ribadu evaded two murder attempts in Nigeria.

In December 2007, Inspector-General of Police Mike Okiro issued an order temporarily removing Ribadu from his post as EFCC chairman and mandating that he enroll in a one-year study at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Jos, Plateau State.

Nobel Prize winner Wole Soyinka, members of the House of Representatives, and Edwin Ume-Ezeoke, national leader of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), among others, criticized the decision as politically motivated and/or likely to impede the battle against corruption.

He was discharged from the Nigerian Police Service Commission (PSC) on December 22, 2008, as was widely expected. After leaving Nigeria, he accepted a fellowship position at the Center for Global Development in April.

The World Bank’s 2008 Jit Gill Memorial Award for Outstanding Public Service was given to Nuhu Ribadu on April 15 in recognition of his leadership of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Nigeria during a valiant anti-corruption campaign.

Mr. Ribadu was demoted from Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) to Deputy Commissioner of Police on August 4, 2008, according to the Police Service Commission of Nigeria. A few weeks before his 2007 term as president came to a close, former President Olusegun Obasanjo elevated Ribadu to the position of AIG.

His graduation at the NIPSS Kuru, Plateau State, was abruptly postponed on November 22, 2008. Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who had been seated in the hall with the other graduates at first, was reportedly asked to leave by senior administrative officials. The way he was treated drew criticism from all over the world.

On December 8, 2018, he received a lifetime achievement award for his work in the anti-corruption movement. Rule of Law and Anti-corruption Centre (ROLACC), a think tank with a base in Qatar, was in charge of administering the prize.
