The Benue Good Governance Network (BGGN) has warmly welcomed the recent visit of Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, to Benue State, praising his efforts to coordinate military operations aimed at restoring peace in conflict-ravaged communities.

Describing the visit as bold, timely, and deeply reassuring, the group said General Oluyede’s presence brought renewed hope to residents who have long suffered from violent attacks and displacement without adequate federal intervention.

In a statement signed by its Convener, Dr Amase Paul, the BGGN highlighted the Army Chief’s hands-on approach, meeting with troops, and engaging local stakeholders as a clear sign of the federal government’s renewed commitment to ending terrorism and protecting innocent lives.

He said: “For many of our people, this visit was like the first rainfall after a long drought.

“It restored our faith in the Nigerian Army and in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.”

Benue has experienced ongoing brutal attacks by armed militias, particularly in rural areas where state protection has been minimal, leaving many dead, homes destroyed, and families displaced.

The recent escalation in violence has left communities feeling abandoned and vulnerable.

The BGGN praised General Oluyede’s direct involvement in coordinating troop deployment as a turning point in the fight against lawlessness in the state.

“His boots-on-the-ground approach shows courage and sincerity. Women now sleep without fear, and our youths feel the government understands their pain,” Dr. Paul added.

The group also commended President Tinubu’s determination to tackle insecurity across Nigeria, especially in neglected regions, and called for sustained military efforts.

“We urge the Chief of Army Staff not to let this visit be a one-off gesture. It should mark the start of continuous, coordinated efforts to permanently end terrorism in Benue,” the statement said.

The BGGN pledged full support from Benue youths, promising to mobilize communities to collaborate closely with the military.

“We will organise and sensitise our people to work hand-in-hand with the Nigerian Army. It is our land, and we will defend it through unity and partnership,” Dr. Paul stated.

Additionally, the group emphasized the importance of post-conflict reconstruction—rebuilding schools, hospitals, roads, and homes destroyed by violence—and called on the military and federal government to prioritize relief and recovery alongside security.

The statement concluded by urging traditional leaders, religious groups, and civil society to support the peace efforts and praised Lieutenant General Oluyede for his courageous leadership.

“We thank him and stand ready to support his mission to restore lasting peace in Benue State,” the group affirmed.
