Activist accuses EFCC of persecution, calls for Tinubu’s intervention

A German-based Nigerian human rights activist, Dele Sonubi, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of colluding with a “serial land grabber” to persecute Dr Rebecca Omokamo Godwin-Isaac, CEO of Homadil Realty Ltd.

In a statement on Monday, Sonubi called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently investigate what he described as a “systematic and vindictive campaign of persecution, harassment, blackmail and defamation” against the real estate entrepreneur.

Sonubi alleged that the anti-graft agency is working with a 79-year-old to illegally dispossess Godwin-Isaac of her legally acquired property — Plot 4022A09 in Guzape District, Abuja.

“How can an old woman stoop to such low, dishonourable tactics — weaponizing her age while dragging respected citizens through mud — just to hijack a piece of land?” Sonubi said.

He described the ongoing legal battles over the land as a case of “desperation turned spectacle”, and claimed all ownership documents are in Rebecca’s name, including powers of attorney, tax clearance, AGIS verification, and confirmations from both the police and ICPC.

Sonubi said: “ICPC and police reports have independently confirmed that Dr Rebecca is the rightful owner of the land.

“Yet, EFCC continues to hound her like a criminal while ignoring the original seller, Architect Richard John Idakwagi, who has already confirmed the transaction under no duress.”

He also accused the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) of acting on the recommendation of its director of investigations, to demolish the property, despite Eriki’s alleged involvement in a billion-naira land racketeering scandal.

“This is the same Eriki that has been exposed in multiple investigations and now recommends demolition in favour of a known land grabber,” Sonubi said.

He referenced a 2023 news report detailing a court order for Eriki’s arrest in connection with land fraud in the FCT.

Sonubi also listed several individuals allegedly involved in the coordinated campaign against Dr Rebecca.

“This is a coordinated plot to suppress justice, ruin reputations and destroy investor confidence in Nigeria,” Sonubi alleged.

He said the EFCC’s treatment of Rebecca mirrors its past actions against other business leaders, warning that the commission’s current posture is detrimental to investor trust.

“This same EFCC once embarrassed Dangote and others. Now they want to crush another Nigerian success story — Homadil Realty Ltd,” he said.

Describing the EFCC’s raid on Rebecca’s residence as “Gestapo-like,” Sonubi said such tactics were traumatic and unbefitting of a democracy.

“President Tinubu must act. This isn’t just about one woman; it’s about Nigeria’s credibility, investment climate, and rule of law.

“We need more companies like Homadil Realty Ltd, not fewer. Nigeria must protect — not persecute — her legitimate entrepreneurs,” he said.

Sonubi also submitted the ICPC’s investigative report as further vindication of Rebecca’s ownership claim and called on the judiciary to resist manipulation and uphold justice.
