A legal practitioner and human rights advocate, Adamu Kabiru Adamu, has called on the Inspector General of Police to urgently address the state of police pension and the welfare of retired officers across the country.
In a letter dated 14th July, 2025 and addressed to the Inspector General at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Adamu expressed deep concern over the difficult conditions many retired police officers face after dedicating their lives to the service and protection of Nigeria.
He noted that delays in pension payments, poor retirement benefits and the absence of proper post-service support have subjected many ex-officers to untold hardship.
“These officers, who once stood at the frontlines of security and law enforcement, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect during retirement,” he said.
While commending the IGP for his ongoing efforts to reposition the police force, Adamu urged him to champion reforms that would restore the dignity and morale of both serving and retired personnel.
He appealed for urgent implementation of key reforms, including prompt and transparent pension disbursement, an upward review of retirement benefits to reflect current economic realities, provision of health insurance for retirees, affordable housing schemes, and effective monitoring and accountability systems to ensure complaints are addressed swiftly.
“These officers have given their youth and strength to Nigeria. They deserve to retire in peace and comfort, not in neglect and suffering,” he added.
Adamu expressed hope that the Inspector General’s leadership would drive meaningful change that would boost the morale of serving officers and give retired officers the peace they deserve.
HE WRITES:
14th July, 2025
The Inspector General of Police,
Nigeria Police Force Headquarters,
Louis Edet House,
Shehu Shagari Way,
Abuja, FCT, Nigeria.
Sir,
URGENT APPEAL FOR REFORM AND CONSIDERATION OF POLICE PENSION AND POST-RETIREMENT WELFARE
I write this letter as a Legal Practitioner, Human Rights Advocate and concerned citizen and advocate for justice and the well-being of our gallant police officers who have dedicated their lives to the service and protection of our dear country, Nigeria. It is with deep concern that I bring to your attention the current state of police pension and the welfare of retired police officers, which requires urgent review and reform.
Many retired officers, after years of selfless service, face untold hardship due to delays in pension payments, inadequate retirement benefits, and lack of post-service support. These officers, who once stood at the frontlines of security and law enforcement, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect during retirement.
Your office remains a symbol of hope and transformation within the Nigeria Police Force, and I believe that your leadership can champion the reforms necessary to restore the dignity and morale of both serving and retired officers. Addressing this issue will not only improve the welfare of retirees but also motivate serving officers to give their best to the nation.
I respectfully request that the following reforms be urgently considered:
1. Timely and Transparent Pension Disbursement: Ensure that all retired officers receive their pensions without delays or bureaucratic hurdles.
2. Upward Review of Retirement Benefits: Adjust pension rates to reflect the current economic realities and rising cost of living.
3. Post-Retirement Health Insurance: Provide access to quality healthcare for retired officers.
4. Housing and Social Welfare Programs: Facilitate affordable housing and support programs for retired personnel.
5. Monitoring and Accountability Systems: Introduce mechanisms to track pension disbursements and address complaints effectively.
Sir, these officers have given their youth and strength to Nigeria. They deserve to retire in peace and comfort, not in neglect and suffering. We trust your office to act with urgency and compassion to bring about these much-needed changes.
Thank you for your attention to this vital matter. May God bless you and continue to grant you the wisdom to lead the Nigeria Police Force to greater heights.
Yours faithfully,
Adamu Kabiru Adamu Esq.
Legal Practitioner and Human Rights Advocate.
