A legal practitioner and human rights advocate, Adamu Kabiru Adamu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently implement comprehensive economic reforms to address the worsening hardship facing millions of Nigerians.

Adamu, who made the appeal in an open letter dated July 20, 2025, said the current economic situation had become unbearable for the average citizen, with inflation rising, unemployment increasing, and basic commodities becoming unaffordable for many households.

He noted that the purchasing power of the naira had weakened drastically while businesses, both large and small, continued to shut down due to operational challenges, insecurity and limited access to finance, further compounding the problem of joblessness.

“The situation demands urgent, sincere and people-oriented reforms,” he said. “It is time to prioritise policies that support local industries, stabilise the currency, reduce the cost of governance and improve the welfare of citizens.”

He warned that if nothing was done urgently, the growing frustration among the youth and poor could lead to widespread unrest and a loss of faith in democratic governance.

Adamu urged the President to consider a range of measures including short- and long-term economic stabilisation plans, subsidy management and relief initiatives targeted at vulnerable citizens, and increased support for local businesses and farmers to boost production.

He also called for stronger anti-corruption measures and greater transparency in government spending to restore public trust, as well as decisive action to tackle insecurity across the country in order to attract investment and drive economic growth.

“Nigeria is a nation with great potential,” Adamu said. “With the right policies and genuine leadership commitment, we can overcome this hardship and build a better, more prosperous future for all.”

He expressed hope that the President would act swiftly in the interest of Nigerians who continue to struggle to meet their daily needs.

Your Excellency, Sir — URGENT CALL FOR ECONOMIC REFORM AND ATTENTION TO NATIONAL HARDSHIP

I write as a Legal practitioner, Human Rights Activist and concerned citizen of our dear country, Nigeria, to call your attention with a heavy heart regarding the increasing level of hardship and the alarming decline of our national economy. The current situation has become unbearable for the average Nigerian, with inflation soaring, unemployment rising, and basic commodities becoming unaffordable for many households.

It is evident that millions of Nigerians are struggling to meet their daily needs, including food, shelter, healthcare, and education. The purchasing power of the Naira has drastically weakened, and the living conditions of the people continue to deteriorate. Many businesses, both large and small, are shutting down due to operational challenges, insecurity, and lack of access to finance, further compounding the issue of joblessness.

Your Excellency, this situation demands urgent, sincere, and people-oriented reforms. It is time to prioritize policies that support local industries, stabilize the currency, reduce the cost of governance, and improve the welfare of citizens. The youth are frustrated, and the poor are becoming hopeless. Without swift action, the frustration could spill into unrest and a loss of faith in democratic governance.

I respectfully urge your office to consider the following steps:

Economic Stabilization Plans: Implement clear, short- and long-term policies to stabilize the economy, including food security measures and job creation schemes.

Subsidy Management and Relief Initiatives: Provide direct support to the most vulnerable Nigerians through social programs.

Support to Local Businesses and Farmers: Encourage local production by supporting agriculture, manufacturing, and small enterprises.

Anti-Corruption and Transparency: Reinforce transparency and accountability in government spending to restore public trust.

Security Reform: Tackle insecurity decisively to encourage investment and economic activity.

Nigeria is a nation with great potential. With the right policies and genuine leadership commitment, we can overcome this hardship and build a better, more prosperous future for all.

Thank you for your attention and anticipated action. May God continue to guide you and grant you wisdom in leading this nation.

Adamu Kabiru Adamu Esq.
Legal Practitioner and Human Rights Advocate.
