Lawyer Seeks Tinubu’s Clemency for Abba Kyari, Cites National Security Contributions

A legal practitioner, Adamu Kabiru Adamu, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to grant presidential clemency to embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari, describing him as a “national security asset” whose sacrifices should not be forgotten.

In a letter dated August 25, 2025, and addressed to the President, Adamu urged Tinubu to temper justice with mercy in Kyari’s case, stressing that the embattled officer had, before his present ordeal, distinguished himself through courage, loyalty and dedication in the fight against violent crimes, terrorism, and insecurity across Nigeria.

“DCP Abba Kyari has, over the years, distinguished himself in the service of our great nation. His operations led to the successful dismantling of numerous criminal syndicates and contributed immensely to improving national security, particularly at a time when insecurity was ravaging various parts of the country,” the lawyer wrote.

He noted that Kyari’s contributions had earned him national and international commendations, adding that his release through presidential clemency would not undermine justice but serve as an act of mercy and reconciliation.

Adamu stressed that such a gesture would reassure Nigerians of the government’s commitment to national healing, unity, and security at a time when public confidence in state institutions is waning.

“Clemency, as enshrined in the Constitution, is not a denial of justice but rather an act of mercy, reconciliation, and national healing. In times when Nigeria is confronted with rising insecurity and public distrust, such an act of compassion can help foster peace, unity, and confidence in government,” the letter partly read.

The plea comes amid growing debates on the place of clemency for public officials facing legal battles, with Kyari’s case remaining one of the most controversial in recent times.
